Williams Communications Deploys Usage-Based Billing for IP Network Using Narus Solution

Flexible, Scalable Narus Solution Is Foundation of Powerful System for Billing, Traffic Engineering, Capacity Management

Palo Alto, CA - January 22, 2002—Narus, Inc. today announced the deployment of its solution at Williams Communications Group, initially to deliver real-time advanced customer-billing information. The Narus solution has been integrated with Williams Communications' IP network, providing the information needed to generate usage-based billing with 99.999% accuracy, for its bandwidth-centric customers. Williams Communications offers its customers their choice of a variety of fixed and flexible billing options based on the customers' specific traffic characteristics.

"We chose Narus as our mediation solution because it allows us to deliver flexible billing services that can be adapted to the needs of our customers," said Mark Bender, chief information officer at Williams Communications. "Narus has established itself as a leader in terms of technology, customer experience, and speed of deployment."

"We already offer flat, tiered, and burstable billing options. With the addition of usage-based billing, Williams Communications' customers can have the option to pay only for the amount of bandwidth they consume. Given today's challenging market conditions, we believe it's important to offer this flexibility for customers looking to reign in their bandwidth expense."

Williams Communications' expanding portfolio of IP-based services provides customers with the ability to leverage the Internet and new web-based technologies over a nationwide OC48, MPLS-enabled IP network. In addition to its network services, Williams Communications offers comprehensive broadband media services, including content gathering and distribution, managed web hosting and streaming, as well as digital media management.

The Narus solution is based on a carrier-class, revenue-grade IP mediation platform with real-time visibility to all services and usage. It provides the critical link between the network infrastructure and key operational and business applications and enables the creation of solutions for specific issues such as advanced billing, revenue leakage and policy abuse detection.

"When it comes to unmatched experience in the needs of bandwidth-centric customers, Williams Communications is the clear leader, and we are proud they have chosen Narus to be part of their infrastructure," said Mark Stone, Narus president and CEO. "Our carrier-grade solution has the flexibility Williams Communications required to be quickly implemented and deployed, with the scalability to grow as the company's network expands."
