Press Release

Narus teams with IBM to deliver comprehensive telecom security solution. IBM's offering, featuring NarusInsight Secure Suite, provides core carrier security as well as a platform for managed security services

What was announced?
IBM's new Telecom Core Infrastructure Security Solution will feature NarusInsight Secure Suite (NSS) software in concert with key IBM technologies such as BladeCenter, Tivoli Netcool, Websphere and DB2 to deliver a powerful, yet modular solution that carriers can buy and scale over time. IBM's new solution combines best-of-breed technology from both companies, with IBM's services capabilities to provide the industry's most comprehensive security and traffic management solution targeted at the world's largest IP networks.

Why is this important to the telecommunications industry?
Security concerns in the telecommunications industry have grown dramatically as carriers redirect their efforts toward launching and delivering IP-based services such as Internet TV and VoIP. These new "services over IP" have made carrier networks particularly vulnerable to a new breed of malicious activity designed to cripple the key components and networks that deliver the services. IBM's Telecom Core Infrastructure Security Solution addresses these concerns with industry-leading accuracy and early anomaly detection, empowering network operators the widest ranges of possible options to mitigate attacks.

What benefits can carriers expect from this solution?

  • Cost savings derived through detecting and mitigating worms, viruses or other attacks before they harm the network
  • Operational cost reduction provided by a single, common management platform for a network-wide security and traffic management solution
  • Protection of key revenue-generating infrastructure and assets
  • A solution that aids in the prevention of global cyber-terrorism and cyber-warfare, a growing requirement of governments around the world
  • Significant new carrier revenue opportunities around security as a managed service

What do analysts think about the need for this type of solution?
According to Brian Partridge, senior analyst at Yankee Group, "While core infrastructure security has certainly emerged as a top-of-mind issue, many of today's telecom carriers recognize that there are also significant new revenue opportunities around leveraging security as a managed service. Many IT managers, struggling with the expertise and resources required to secure their enterprise networks, are requiring that their telecom carriers provide 'clean pipes' that are already cleansed of worms and viruses. The ideal solution is a single, integrated security platform, such as IBM's TCISS, that is truly comprehensive, yet flexible and modular. This allows carriers to scale to the rigors of securing carrier-class networks, while extending that umbrella to managed security offerings for their customers."
