Research Indicates Increased Network Attacks and Bandwidth Concerns Driving Adoption of Sophisticated IP Security Solutions
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.—October 17 , 2007—Narus, Inc., the leader in carrier-class security for the world’s largest IP networks, today announced the results of an extensive Yankee Group report that evaluates the return on investment (ROI) of core IP security solutions in the carrier environment. The new research, based on extensive interviews with several Tier 1 operators, examines the market drivers forcing the increased adoption of holistic IP security solutions, including the enhanced complexity and rate of attacks, and growing bandwidth requirements. The report also evaluates the long-term cost savings, both in cash and brand protection, of implementing a core IP security solution with the capabilities to detect and analyze complex security threats to the carrier network.
“The DDoS attack on the Estonian government in May 2007 was a wake-up call to governments and the carrier industry, prompting an increased number of carriers to prioritize the implementation of a best-in-class core security solution with deep visibility and analysis capabilities,” said Brian Partridge, program manager at Yankee Group and author of the report. “Yankee Group's research reveals that carriers anticipate increases in attack volume and severity over the next 36 months. Effective threat mitigation on today’s massive networks will require the holistic correlation of security, network, traffic and routing information to create the context that is missing in traditional security systems.”
In a sample ROI study within the report, the cash-flow impact on a Tier 1 carrier implementing a carrier IP security solution was compared to the financial impact on the same carrier operating with a more traditional defense, consisting of in-depth solutions but without a holistic carrier IP security system with DDoS detection capabilities. Analysis incorporated a number of assumptions, including the upfront implementation costs, the average year-over-year growth and an average annual volume of DDoS attacks.
The result: When the carrier deploys an IP security solution in support of IPTV service and a managed clean pipes offering, analysis demonstrates an internal rate of return of 125 percent.*
“Due to increased pressure to both protect their own networks and provide services to their end customers, carriers look to Narus for scalable, IP security and management solutions designed with the unique carrier infrastructure demands in mind,” said Steve Bannerman, vice president of marketing and product management at Narus. “This Yankee study not only confirms that IP infrastructure security is critical to carrier revenues, but that traditional Enterprise-class technology is insufficient to achieve these returns.”
NarusInsight™ Secure Suite (NSS) directly addresses the specific security and traffic intelligence requirements of the carrier market. NSS enables carriers to detect attacks, abuse and behavioral anomalies in real-time and to direct actions that can prevent security breaches, attack propagation, loss of productivity and network outages. It combines high visibility of the network traffic with full correlation among all the other elements on the network (such as routers, firewalls or IPS/IDS), across all of the links on the network as well as external storage facilities to access historical data. This total network view of combined traffic visibility and network correlation enables unprecedented accuracy and industry-leading performance. In addition, NarusInsight Secure Suite provides the ability to non-intrusively collect and process user traffic in real-time, generating statistics on abusive usage patterns and malicious IP traffic.
